Former Buganda Katikkiro (Prime Minister) Eng. John Baptist Walusimbi has handed over the office to his successor and City lawyer Charles Peter Mayiga, making him the fourth and youngest Prime Minister in the Mutebi era.
Eng. JB Walusimbi retired after serving the Kingdom for close to 23 years prompting the King to find a suitable replacement.
He served as deputy finance minister and later full minister before being appointed as Prime Minister (Katikkiro).
At the hand over ceremony held at the Bulange-Mengo palace, Walusimbi thanked the Kabaka for having entrusted him with the office of Katikkiro for the time he has served in this position. He also thanked the Kabaka for accepting his retirement but promised to remain loyal to Him as well as the Kingdom.
“Building a kingdom is not an easy task and whoever is appointed to this office simply comes to put a brick. But I thank the Kabaka who entrusted me with such a huge role and I think I have played my part,” said Walusimbi.
He gave Mr Mayiga a handover report and a file containing numerous documents related to the office and its operations.
Mr Mayiga applauded his predecessor for diligently serving Buganda Kingdom and pledged to build on what he has left. “Mr Walusimbi has promoted unity which is a basic tenet for development and there is no doubt that we have moved a step forward as a kingdom during his tenure despite enormous challenges .I promise to build on his achievements and to always consult him,”
